Students can start college early! PRSD's new partnership with Northern Lakes College

For immediate release
April 6, 2018 –Starting this September, Peace River School Division (PRSD) high school students will have the option to start post-secondary studies in the health care field thanks to a dual credit partnership with Northern Lakes College (NLC) and a $50,000 grant from Alberta Education.

“This is an awesome opportunity for students and we are thrilled to partner with Northern Lakes College to offer the Health Care Aide program to our students” says PRSD Superintendent Paul Bennett.  “Northern Lakes College is a highly regarded post-secondary institution and we are very happy to work together to bring greater opportunities for students, and better serve and fill the needs of our communities in the health care field.”

NLC’s Health Care Aide program is open to PRSD students in grades ten to twelve and PRSD is helping to remove financial strain by offering a $3000 bursary for ten students per year accepted into the program. Tuition for the Health Care Aide program is approximately $3600 and with the bursary offered by PRSD, the program will only cost students around $600.

“Working alongside post-secondary institutions is beneficial to students, communities and society” says Bennett.  “It helps us to better serve our students through hands-on learning opportunities that allow them to have a head start in their career. Opportunities like this allow students to explore different careers and it teaches them important life skills. It builds confidence, exposes them to post-secondary studies and prepares them for the work force.”

The program is being offered using a blended model which means that the course is online with computer based lectures, face-to-face lab seminars delivered at NLC Peace River campus, and a five week clinical practicum.  At the end of the school year and upon successful completion of the program, students will earn a Health Care Aide certificate from Northern Lakes College plus 25 high school credits toward their high school diploma. Prerequisites for the program include English 10-1 or 10-2 and Math 10-3 or equivalent is strongly recommended.

“On behalf of the board of trustees, we extend gratitude to Northern Lakes College for their partnership in offering dual-credit programming for PRSD students” says PRSD Board Chair Darren Kuester.  “Having school divisions and post-secondary institutions work together not only brings a multitude of benefits to our students, it helps to address employment gaps and it increases services and supports in our communities. This partnership clearly speaks to our mission statement “Learning together – success for all.” We look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this partnership in the lives of our students and all those they will serve in the health care field.”
